Photojournalist Ladislav Bielik documented the first days of intervention by the Warshaw Pact armies in Bratislava. One of the 187 shots made became the best known Slovak photograph. The Bare-chested Man in front of the Occupier´s Tank was selected for many collections of the 20th century´s most significant pictures. The story of the image, its author, and that man in front of the tank, set in the context of the historic events, accompanies reproductions of the entire film and other materials of the period. Shortly after the Velvet Revolution, Peter Bielik (son of Ladislav Bielik) discovered the negatives in a suitcase, in the Petržalka housing complex cellar where his father Ladislav Bielik had hidden them from the state´s secret police. The unusual format makes from this book a very special artefact. Language: English, Slovak
About the author:Ladislav Bielik was born on the 28th of May1939 and died tragically on the 24th of March 1984 in Hungary while he was carrying out his duty. Ladislav Bielik entered the history of the 20th century Slovak photography mainly for two reasons: he worked as a photojournalist for the daily Smena and the weekly Štart and became a well-known photographer of sports events. In 1968 he took photographs in Bratislava and documented the memorable days of the occupation of Czechoslovakia. His most famous photograph is considered to be The Bare-chested Man in front of the Occupier´s Tank, the photograph taken on Šafárik´s Square in Bratislava became the symbol of resistance against the act of aggression of the occupation troops of the Warshaw Pact states in the former Czechoslovakia.
